Hello! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving week and have been keeping warm and dry!

Next week we will continue our vocabulary and grammar routines. Here is a reminder of the assignments and due dates:

Monday-all assignments given (vocabulary sentences and practice questions on Edmodo, grammar packet)
Tuesday- Vocabulary sentences due on Edmodo
Thursday- vocabulary assignment (10 questions) on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
  Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

Resources to review the next prefix, “bi-” can be found in the folder on our Edmodo class page.

We started Revolutionary War novel groups this past week.  Students have had some time in class to get started on their assignments; anything not finished in class should be completed at home by the due date.  Due dates and assignments can be found inside students’ file folders or here.

Winter MAP testing will be the week of December 10. 5th grade students will be taking the math assessment Tuesday, December 11 at 9:10. The reading assessment is scheduled for Friday, December 14 at 1:10. If you are able to schedule absences around these times, that would be great!

We are wrapping up our study of Earth in Space.  Big ideas, keys for notes, and resources for each lesson can be found here.  The unit test is scheduled for Tuesday, December 4th.  In conjunction with this unit, we will also be working on some design engineering projects where students research problems with space exploration and work to design potential solutions.  We will tie this in to the Cardboard Challenge for this year! Here is the information from Mrs. Wasik about this year’s challenge:
Dear Parents,
Your child’s class will be participating in Dryden’s own version of the Global Cardboard Challenge in December, inspired by a 9 year old boy, who built an arcade entirely out of cardboard. This cardboard idea sparked a movement and the Imagination Foundation, whose mission is to foster creativity and entrepreneurship in children around the world.
Students will be working in small groups to design something out of cardboard that can help solve a problem tied to space exploration. They may have some parameters with ideas as to what the solution could be, but the idea of this project is to foster collaboration and creativity.  Students will also be problem solving, reflecting, and giving/receiving feedback as they design. The culminating activity will be an hour in the morning or afternoon of sharing and play with other classrooms that participated as well.

The classroom is in need of cardboard- all shapes, sizes, and colors!  Please DO NOT send in cardboard that contained food at any point for allergy purposes.  Examples of some great boxes- shoe boxes, Amazon boxes, etc. Many thanks in advance for your help!

We can’t wait to get creative!!
Mrs. Wasik

Have a great Dolphin week!

Your child’s report card will be emailed home today. We are no longer sending paper copies. Please be on the lookout for this email and be sure to let me know if you have not received your child’s report card by Monday.  Students with IEP or ELL updates will be receiving envelopes containing those reports; please look for those in your student's Friday folder.
Next week the students have no school all week (11/19-11/23).

After Thanksgiving we will continue our grammar and vocabulary routines.
Here is the breakdown:
Monday- all assignments given (vocabulary sentences, vocabulary assignment on Edmodo,
   grammar packet)
Tuesday- vocabulary sentences due on Edmodo
Thursday- vocabulary assignment (10 questions) on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
   Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

We completed some follow-up reflections on our Robert Crown Presentation from last week on the Science Behind Drugs and Prevention. You can click here to access a letter from the Robert Crown Center that outlines what the students were learning about as well as some ways that you can follow up at home. Robert Crown.  There is a video referenced in this letter. Due to time constraints and my concerns about how the content of the video would be received by the students, we did not watch it together as a class. You are welcome to watch the video at home and discuss with your student, as you see fit.

We are continuing our study of Earth in Space after Thanksgiving.  Big ideas and resources for each lesson can be found here.  In conjunction with this unit, we will continue to research space exploration and if it is worth the cost with Mrs. Kovacic in the LMC.  We’ll also be working on some design engineering projects where students research problems with space exploration and work to design potential solutions.  We will tie this in to the Cardboard Challenge for this year! I hope you had a great week! Thanks to all the parents that planned and volunteered at our combined 5th grade Halloween party. Everyone had a great time!

-There will be no grammar or vocabulary assignments next week. We will be using that time to work on our personal narrative essays. Students will be working on their personal narratives in their Google accounts. Final papers are due November 9. We will be working next week on revising and editing.

-We are taking a break from social studies to focus on science. Our first science unit is Earth in Space. Big ideas and resources for each lesson can be found here. In conjunction with this unit, we will be researching space exploration and is it worth the cost with Mrs. Kovacic in the LMC. We’ll also be working on some design engineering projects where students research problems with space exploration and work to design potential solutions.

-Due to Robert Crown on Tuesday and the Veterans Day assembly on Friday, there will be no math on November 6th or 9th.

-Novel group instruction was postponed until after Thanksgiving break to allow time to establish guided reading groups. Details about Revolutionary War novels will be shared once we begin. -Remember to return your student’s signed and emptied Friday folder on Monday.
