I hope you've had a great week and that you have a chance to enjoy the cooler temperatures this weekend!

Here are some updates for next week in 5-2...

- Our grammar and vocabulary routine will continue next week.  Here is the breakdown:
Monday- all assignments given (vocabulary sentences, vocabulary assignment on Edmodo,
    grammar packet)
Tuesday- vocabulary sentences due (can be submitted on Edmodo or paper)
Thursday- vocabulary assignment (10 questions) on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes (after we return from Naper Settlement)

- Students will be bringing home a Unit 10 assessment sheet for social studies in their Friday folders this week.  This sheet shows your student's performance on standards related to his/her Chapter 10 poster project, which can be found in his/her Google Classroom account.

- If you have not yet returned your Camp Duncan permission slip, please return it as soon as possible.

- Please remember to sign and return your student's EMPTY Friday folder each week.  There are two inserts in the middle prongs for you to look at and sign.  There was no Friday Folder this week as we ran out of time last Friday.

- Students have been working on tree stories during their LMC time.  As students finish these, they will be bringing a copy home in their Friday folders.  The digital copy of your student's tree story can be found in Google Classroom.  If you're interested in submitting your student's tree story to the Morton Arboretum, details from Mrs. Kovacic can be found below:

Dear Parents,
As part of our One Book, One Dryden reading of Wishtree by Katherine Applegate, students explored the Morton Arboretum’s Tree-Stories project at www.tree-stories.org.  We read Our Tree Named Steve by Alan Zweibel and I shared some of my personal tree connections with them.  Ms Wilson, one of our 3rd grade teachers, even brought in a picture of her childhood climbing and reading tree to share.  We then wrote our own memories associated with trees.
If you would like to submit your story to the Morton Arboretum’s Tree-Stories project, you can visit their website and enter your student’s story.  It may be selected to be posted online and you could win ticket to Illuminations, their popular winter event. Note that parent permission is required for submission.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Beth Kovacic

I hope you had a great week and that you had a chance to enjoy the extra summer weather this weekend!

Here are some updates for the week ahead...

- Our vocabulary and grammar routine continue next week.
    Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

This week's prefix is "mono-."

- The Loyalist/Patriot research assignment is due on Tuesday.  Students received a note-taking sheet to help with planning their final paragraphs.  Final paragraphs should be submitted by Tuesday at 9:15 am.  Students have had time in class to work on this, but will not have significant class time on Monday to continue their work.

- We put together a plan to help organize the routine assignments that occur each week.  Students will be bringing home a copy of this suggestion in their Friday folders or you can access it here.   Students generally have time each day to start math assignments in class and have about 20 minutes of reading work time daily.  As a result, some students may end up finishing some of the work on this suggested plan in class.

- School Picture Day is Thursday, September 20.  Order forms were sent home with students last week.  You can send your form back in or order online, whatever works best for your family!

- Fugleflick forms were sent home in this week's Friday folder, as well.  If your student is interested in this club, please be sure to bring your form back Monday.  Students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and spaces usually fill up quickly!

- Remember to return your student's Friday folder on Monday.  It should be returned signed and empty.

- If you have not yet returned your Naper Settlement or Camp Duncan permission slips, please be sure to do so, as soon as possible.

- Don't forget to fill out the survey indicating your conference preference.  The email and link from our administrators is included below:

Parent Teacher Conference Time Preferences

Dear Parents,
We are planning for our parent / teacher conferences that will take place in October. With conferences across our school district taking place earlier this year than in past years, we are looking forward to being able to review your child's fall benchmark assessments and discuss your child(ren)'s learning goals and interests with you. Sibling conferences will be scheduled back-to-back whenever possible. Conference dates and times are as follows:

Thursday, October 18        8:15 AM - 7:45 PM
Friday, October 19            8:15 AM - 11:45 AM

We strongly encourage you to schedule your conference on the dedicated dates listed above and not on another date or time. Please use form on the link below to indicate your preference for the time of day and date of your conference by Friday, September 21. We ask that you complete one form for each child. A notice of your child(ren)'s specific conference times will be sent home by classroom teachers via backpack mail on Friday, September 28.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCE TIME PREFERENCE
Sincerely,
Akemi Sessler, Principal   and   Stefanie Beane, Assistant Principal

Happy weekend!  I hope you had a great week.  We've been busy getting into new routines and expectations this past week.  Here are some updates for next week:

- Next week, the grammar and vocabulary routine will continue.  Here is the breakdown for next week:
Monday- all assignments given (vocabulary sentences, vocabulary assignment on Edmodo,
    grammar packet)
Tuesday- vocabulary sentences due (can be submitted on Edmodo or paper)
Thursday- vocabulary assignment (10 questions) on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
    Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

- Next week, students with numbers 13-23 have their first reading response letters due.  This assignment should be completed in your student's reading response spiral.

- Monday and Tuesday, select students will be taking the MAP test for progress monitoring purposes.  You would have received an email from me last week if your student is scheduled to test.  If you have questions about which assessment, if any, your student is taking, please let me know.

- This week you should have seen a test form come home inside the Friday Folder. This will be a running spreadsheet in which the students will be recording each assessment, a quick reflection, and an indication of their performance. Depending on the test and whether it was done online or on paper, you may also find a copy of the test or an assessment feedback form in this folder. We ask that you please review these assessments with your child and then initial the spreadsheet next to that assessment. Please take out and keep at home any feedback forms or tests-just leave the spreadsheet in the prongs of the folder. We are using this format to help bridge the gap between traditional grading and our new standards based grading. We will do our best with each assessment to communicate how your child is performing related to the content area standards, as well as what a traditional point value may have been. We have discussed with all the students the switch in grading and what it means for them, but we are sure there will be many questions along the way. If you or your child have any questions about our new system or about assessment feedback, please be sure to reach out (or have your child ask!). Each week, we ask that you please review the Friday Folder and send it back to school signed and empty the following week.

- We had our first social studies test this week. Students completed an assessment feedback sheet Friday morning related to the standard assessed; this sheet can be found in your student's Friday folder. Students who did not meet the standard should should check the post on Edmodo for details on how to prepare for the retake. Students retaking the test should have completed the steps listed on Edmodo by Tuesday, September 11.

- We will be starting Chapter 11 of social studies this week. Students will have a short research assignment this week about Patriots and Loyalists not included in our textbook. Be sure to check Edmodo on Wednesday for details and due dates.

- Please return your 5th grade t-shirt order form and Naper Settlement permission slip as soon as possible. Those were given to students Tuesday. If you need another copy of either form, please let me know.

- School picture forms were given to students on Friday. Picture day is Thursday, September 20.

Have a great Dolphin week!
