It's hard to believe that it is already October. September has just flown by. By now our routines are down and the kids are adjusting well to being fifth graders. SCIENCE-We started our unit on energy last week with a discovery of the two basic types of energy: stored energy and energy in motion. the children will learn about 8 different types this week during an energy walk around the school. ADVANCED MATH-The Unit 2 test will be Friday. There will be a review session before school on Thursday at 8:30. Picture day is Thursday. Please prepay before Thursday. All the information is on the package that was sent home. Please return the permission slip and $2.75 for the trip to Olive School on 10/11 for the Historical Reenactment by this Friday. Have a great Dolphin week! We had a great time at Naper Settlement on Friday. The weather cooperated and the kids enjoyed all of the reenactors. When we left, they had a better feel about life in the late 1700s and early 1800. SOCIAL STUDIES-The Lesson 11 test is on Tuesday. We will review on Monday in preparation. SCIENCE-We will be starting our energy unit this week. A note was sent home on Friday asking for magazines and 2 liter bottles to donate. ADVANCED MATH-The Unit 1 retest is Monday. We have LMC this week on Tuesday. Please remember to return your books. If your child ordered a Cheesie Mac book, they will he delivered Monday. Have a great Dolphin week! Steve Cotler, the author of the Cheesie Mac stories, visited Dryden today. The kids enjoyed listening to his stories. Another week has flown by. We're really into the groove now as we are used to the normal routines of our schedule. SOCIAL STUDIES-The kids will be participating in a Loyalists vs. Patriots debate this week to decide whether the American colonies should declare independence from Britain. LANGUAGE ARTS-The spelling and grammar tests will be on Thursday this week as we will be at Naperville Settlement on Friday. The grammar packet and spelling assignments are due Wednesday this week. TREASURES-The Treasures assessment will still be given on Friday this week when we return from our field trip. On Thursday this week we will be spending time with Steve Cotler, the author of the Cheesie Mac series of books. Naper Settlement is a rain or shine trip so please send your child to school dressed accordingly. Also, please remember to send a sack lunch to school that day. Have a great Dolphin week! The first social studies test is now history! The overall grades were good, although some were lower than we would have liked. There will be an opportunity to retest for a higher grade on Tuesday.
We will be starting our next lesson on the American Revolution on Monday. The children will be able to participate in a debate consisting of loyalists and patriots to close out this lesson. Small-group novels were started last week and all groups met except for one. I will be meeting with each group once a week to discuss the reading assignment and give the work for the next week. The books we're reading are: George Washington's Socks, Toliver's Secret, Chains, and My Brother Sam is Dead. The advanced math class will be having the Unit 1 test on Thursday. Please sign and return your child's Friday Folder/Test Folder. Please return the Naper Settlement permission slip and payment by Wednesday. Our first full week of school went very well! We are getting settled into our routine and I can already see that it is going to be a pleasure working with your children this year. Our first evacuation drill went off smoothly, and I enjoyed meeting all of you at Curriculum Night! Please return your signed forms as soon as possible.
There will be a Social Studies assessment on Wednesday. The kids received a Lesson 10 Study Guide already and we will review it on Tuesday in order to prepare. They may also want to check out the History Alive! online tutorial. Please sign your child's Friday Folder and Test Folder. There will actually be tests in there this Friday! Please sign and return the Naper Settlement permission slip and money as soon as possible.
