Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! A few updates:

This is a "normal" vocabulary and grammar week. Vocabulary sentences will be due on Tuesday. The vocabulary assignment on Edmodo and grammar packet will be due on Thursday.  Quizzes will be on Friday.

Our class will be visiting the book fair on Thursday. Students may bring money to shop during our class visit time Thursday, if they would like.

Students with numbers 11-19 have their next reading response letters due on Friday 2/2.

We will be started Freedom Walkers last week, which covers the Montgomery Bus Boycott during the Civil Rights movement. This book ties in to our nonfiction studies as well as The Liberation of Gabriel King, which we are reading for our current writing unit.

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day around 2:30 on that day. If your student would like to pass out valentines, please remember that no food items may be attached or distributed at school.  There are 19 students in our class; a class list of names was sent home on Friday.

Global Play Day is also coming (2/7).  We will be playing from 2:30-3:25 on this day.  Fifth grade students do not need to bring in any specific types of games or toys (just nothing electronic!). Here is a message from Mrs. Wasik with more details.

The Advanced Math class will have the Unit 6 test this week on Wednesday.

Have a great Dolphin week!

I hope you had a great weekend and that your students enjoyed their extra day off!  Here are some updates for this week...

- We're back to grammar and vocabulary.  Vocabulary sentences will be due on Wednesday.  The vocabulary assignment on Edmodo and grammar packet will be due on Thursday.  Quizzes will be on Friday.  Resources to review this week's root can be found in the folder on our Edmodo class page or by clicking here.

- The nonfiction reading unit test is currently scheduled for Thursday.  Students will be completing a study guide in class today.  Students should also review the handouts in the nonfiction sections of their reading binders, being sure to know the types of nonfiction, nonfiction text structures, and nonfiction text features.

- The Chapter 15 social studies test is Wednesday.  Resources to review will be posted to Edmodo or can be found here.

- Just a reminder that our class will be attending the book fair on February 1 at 9:40.

- Mrs. Thompson will be presenting to the 5th grade math classes content related to Erin's Law the week of February 26.  Students in Mrs. Eggert's math class will attend on February 26, and my math class will attend the presentation on Tuesday, February 27.  Students in Mrs. Schindler's math class and Mrs. Helm's math class will attend the presentation on Wednesday, February 28.  Mrs. Melton's math kids will attend on February 29th.  Mrs. Sessler shared information in her update for parents wishing to opt out of this presentation.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.  Mrs. Thompson always does a fantastic job handling difficult topics with students in a sensitive way, and I've always been impressed with how she's presented this information to my students.

Have a great Dolphin week!

Welcome back and Happy New Year!! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and holidays and was able to find some fun while keeping warm!

Thank you so much for all of the gifts and the generous gift card!  Check out the picture below to see how I used it!

Now that we are back in the swing of things, a few updates....

This week is a review week for vocabulary. Sentences are still due Tuesday, and the practice question assignment is still due Thursday. There is no new prefix or root.  Students will be reviewing the 12 we have done so far. There is still a quizlet for this review posted to Edmodo. Students need to know the definitions of the 12 prefixes and roots we have studied this year.  Grammar will continue as usual, with the packet due on Thursday. The vocabulary review quiz and grammar quiz will both be on Friday.

We started The Liberation of Gabriel King today. This will mostly be read at school together as a class, but if students miss any of it in class, they are expected to make up the chapters at home. We will be not only reading the book, but using it in writing to practice responding to fiction text and analyzing characters throughout a story.

The Winter MAP schedule for our class is as follows: 1/16/18- Reading (1:10-2:40) and 1/18/18- Math (10:15-11:45).  If you are able, please schedule absences around these times.  Make-up testing for any absent students is scheduled for 1/23/18.

We will begin History Alive Chapter 14 on the Constitution this week, as well.

Have a great Dolphin week!
