I hope you had a great week and that you're staying warm in this FRIGID weather!  Here are some updates for next week:

Next week’s weather forecast is looking pretty rough!  It appears there is a chance that school could be cancelled for inclement weather.  As a result, we have decided to postpone next week’s grammar and vocabulary assignments in order to ensure we have enough time to review social studies, wrap up novel groups, and continue with Freedom Walkers.  Announcements about school closings will come from Dr. Bein’s office; at this point, no decisions have been made to cancel school any days next week.  Plan on a “regular week,” just no grammar and vocabulary. If school does end up being cancelled at some point, any necessary changes to assessment dates will be announced on Edmodo.

Students with numbers 13-24 have their next Vlog due on Friday, February 1. The directions, topic choices, and rubric for assessing them can be found here.

Next Friday, February 1st, the students will take a test on the Revolutionary War novel they are now completing. We will work on a study guide next week in preparation. This will be an open book test and students may use their packets and notes from novel group meetings; the study guide may not be used on the test. Students should be sure to review their notes and study guide prior to the test to ensure they can use their test time effectively and efficiently.

Tuesday, January 29th we will have our History Alive Chapter 15 Test on the Bill of Rights. Resources to review can be found here or on Edmodo.

The Scholastic Book Fair returns to Dryden next week!  Our class will visit the book fair during the school day on Wednesday, January 30.  Students will not be allowed to shop during the lunch hours, but they may shop during our class visit or at Family Reading Night on January 31.  A flyer was sent home in your student’s Friday folder.

At the end of February, 5th Grade will have the annual Erin’s Law Presentations. These will be given by our wonderful social worker, Mrs. Judy Thompson. Each 5th grade class is scheduled sometime throughout the week of February 25th. If you would like any further information about Erin’s Law, our district website has some resources you can explore.

Have a great Dolphin week!

Hi and welcome back! We jumped right back into the swing of things! It is hard to believe we were on break just a week ago....

This week we will continue our grammar and vocabulary routines.  We’re back to a normal week!

Monday- all assignments given (vocabulary sentences, vocabulary assignment on Edmodo,
  grammar packet)
Tuesday- vocabulary sentences due on Edmodo
Thursday- vocabulary assignment on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
  Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

We’re back to social studies!  We began studying the constitution and branches of government this past week.  A test over chapter 14 is currently scheduled for Friday, January 18. Resources to review will be posted to Edmodo or can be found here.

Students with numbers 13-24 have their next Vlog due on Friday, January 18. The directions, topic choices, and rubric for assessing them can be found here.

Students will be bringing home a report card assessment sheet for the fiction unit test in this week’s Friday folder.  This sheet highlights students’ progress on standards assessed on the fiction unit test. The test can be found on Edmodo.  We reviewed the answers together in class and talked further about strategies for crafting extended response essays. This assessment is just one measure of students’ progress against the standards. If your student was not meeting standards on this assessment, he/she will have other opportunities to show understanding of those skills.

This week we started our nonfiction reading unit. In correlation with this unit, we also started the book, Freedom Walkers by Russell Freedman. This book is about the impact of Jim Crow Laws in the south and how they led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and consequently the Civil Rights Movement. The students have already been so engaged and thoughtful about what we have read and have been asking deep, meaningful questions. We are having rich conversations about the text and time period. Later this month we will also begin reading a historical fiction book, The Liberation of Gabriel King, by KL Going. This book is set in the south in 1976, shortly after schools are integrated. It follows 2 friends of different races as they tackle fears and pressures from the world around them. The "N" word is used in context in these two texts. We will be having very direct conversation with the students about the severity of this word and being very clear that while we want them to understand how and why it was used, that it is unacceptable for them to use it. In years past, students have all taken this topic very seriously and been very mature about it. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a great Dolphin week!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone for the incredibly generous class gift! I am so fortunate to work with such a wonderful, sweet group of kids and to work with such thoughtful families. I truly appreciate the generosity and kindness! I ended up purchasing clamps from Rockler because a woodworker can never have enough clamps!

After break we will continue our grammar and vocabulary routines, although our vocabulary will be a review of the first 12 prefixes and roots. Students will still need to write sentences and answer vocabulary questions on Edmodo, but it will be slightly different as these assignments will cover a sampling from all 12 weeks.

Monday- all assignments given (vocabulary sentences, vocabulary assignment on Edmodo,
  grammar packet)
Tuesday- vocabulary sentences due on Edmodo
Thursday- vocabulary assignment on Edmodo due, grammar packet due
  Friday- vocabulary and grammar quizzes

Students with numbers 1-12 have their next Vlog due on Friday, January 11. The directions, topic choices, and rubric for assessing them can be found here.

CogAT reports were sent home with students on Wednesday.  If you did not receive your report or if you have questions, please let me know.

I hope everyone had a very Happy Holiday and a wonderful winter break. I hope you all had time with loved ones, time to laugh, and time kick back a bit! See you soon!
