If your child is sick one of these days and needs to make up a test we will be holding make-up sessions throughout the 2-week testing window (3/3-3/14).  The designated make-up days are Thursday, March 13th & Friday, March 14th, but if the schedule allows they may possibly make up a test sooner.  Please make every effort to have your child here at school on time every day (unless they are ill!).

Please help your child by ensuring that they have enough rest each night, as well as a healthy breakfast, snack, and lunch each day.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

SCIENCE-We will finish up our study of the human body this week and test on Friday.  A unit review will be forthcoming.  On Thursday, the entire fifth grade will participate in the final "Survival" style end to the human body UbD project to see which body system will be "kicked off" the "island" and which body system is the winner.

LITERACY-We'll continue to work on close reading activities this week using a variety of nonfiction resources.

Please return the Robert Crown Life Begins permission slip if you haven't done so.

I hope you all enjoyed the extra day off.  We had a wonderful Valentine's Day party on Friday.  Thanks to my wonderful room moms for putting this together!

SCIENCE-On Tuesday the kids will be making bone burritos to help them visualize the composition of human bone.  I emailed the ingredient list on Friday.  Here is a link in case you missed it.  We will be viewing the kids' body systems presentations this week in preparation for the big "Survivor" style final voting.  May the best body system win!

SPELLING/GRAMMAR-The spelling assignment and grammar packet will be due on Thursday and the assessments will be Friday.

Have a great Dolp

We made it to the week before winter break!  Who would have thought that we would get here so fast?

SOCIAL STUDIES-We are finished with social studies for a time.  We will start our science unit of the human body after break.

TREASURES-There will be no Treasures this week.  We will have a grammar packet and spelling assignment due on WEDNESDAY this week and tests on THURSDAY.  This is unusual but necessary as we won't have time on Friday for those tests.

Freedom Walkers-We continue our discussion of the book this week and because of the great class discussions and depth of material, we will continue after break as well.  I am impressed with how the kids are dealing with the content of this book.  You should be proud of your children!

ADVANCED MATH-The Unit 5 test is on Tuesday.  We had a class discussion and it was decided that we would like to have the opportunity for a retest before break.  The retest for the Unit 5 test is on Friday.  A review session for the test is on Monday at lunch recess.  Patrols should get subs.

Please make sure that your child has a book to read at school.  This should be a self-selected book read for pleasure.

Please return the A Christmas Story permission slips by Friday.  Every student will need a signed slip to view the film as a reward.

Have a great Dolphin week and a wonderful Holiday season!

The Just Jump fundraiser went well.  It was great watching all the kids jumping to raise money for the PTA.  Each child will receive a jump rope on Monday from the PTA as a thank you for participating.

SCIENCE-We learned about energy transfers last week and the kids will have an opportunity to map how energy is transferred this week as they "play" with various toys.

TREASURES-This will be a normal Treasures week with a spelling assignment and grammar packet due on Thursday.  The spelling, grammar, and Treasures tests will be on Friday.

The Historical Reenactment is Friday.  We will be traveling to Olive School from 9:30-11:30.  It is a rain or shine event, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. If you have not already returned your permission slip and $2.75, please do so as soon as possible.  For more information about the event, click here.

We have LMC this week on Tuesday.

Have a great Dolphin week!

The first social studies test is now history!  The overall grades were good, although some were lower than we would have liked.  There will be an opportunity to retest for a higher grade on Tuesday.

We will be starting our next lesson on the American Revolution on Monday.  The children will be able to participate in a debate consisting of loyalists and patriots to close out this lesson.

Small-group novels were started last week and all groups met except for one.  I will be meeting with each group once a week to discuss the reading assignment and give the work for the next week.  The books we're reading are: George Washington's Socks, Toliver's Secret, Chains, and My Brother Sam is Dead.

The advanced math class will be having the Unit 1 test on Thursday.

Please sign and return your child's Friday Folder/Test Folder.

Please return the Naper Settlement permission slip and payment by Wednesday.

Our first full week of school went very well!  We are getting settled into our routine and I can already see that it is going to be a pleasure working with your children this year.  Our first evacuation drill went off smoothly, and I enjoyed meeting all of you at Curriculum Night!  Please return your signed forms as soon as possible.

There will be a Social Studies assessment on Wednesday.  The kids received a Lesson 10 Study Guide already and we will review it on Tuesday in order to prepare.  They may also want to check out the History Alive! online tutorial.

Please sign your child's Friday Folder and Test Folder.  There will actually be tests in there this Friday!

Please sign and return the Naper Settlement permission slip and money as soon as possible.

You may want to consider sending a hoodie or sweater to school with your child as the classroom temperature is on the cool side.

I hope you enjoy your long weekend.  Have a great Dolphin
